What is Performance Anxiety? Performance Anxiety is a state of intense fear or nervousness in anticipation of, or even during, a performance or event. Often called “stage fright,” it’s a common condition that can significantly impact an individual's well-being and performance. Who might be affected by Performance Anxiety? People of all ages can be affected by bouts of Performance Anxiety to varying degrees. Children and teens might be likely to experience anxiety when asked to stand up and speak in front of the class, while adults might feel anxious before speaking to employers and colleagues in the workplace. Musicians, vocalists, actors, dancers – even experienced public speakers – may find it almost impossible to perform in public. Athletes may get extremely anxious before a competition. Auditions, exams, and try-outs are well-known situations where anyone might feel overly anxious and unable to do their best. What are the symptoms of Performance Anxiety? Performance Anxiety is often characterized by physical symptoms such as sweating, feeling faint, trembling, rapid heartbeat, stomach upset, and difficulty concentrating – or psychological symptoms such as fear of failure, worry about making mistakes or not meeting expectations, negative self-talk and fear of potential criticism. Feelings of panic or dread, or experiencing a "fight, flight or freeze" response, can become overwhelming or even paralyzing. How can hypnotherapy help me overcome my anxiety? Hypnotherapy uses the power of your own mind to overcome anxiety. Hypnotherapy is a safe, gentle process, very much akin to day-dreaming. It lets your thoughts and troubles fade into the background − allowing your mind to embrace new methods for coping, and replacing old negative messages with positive thoughts and actions. In our initial meeting, we'll discuss your overall physical and psychological health, your personal history, and the specific goals you would like to achieve. You’ll end the session by experiencing a comfortable, relaxing hypnotic journey complete with post-hypnotic suggestions to get you started overcoming anxiety. Working together, we'll develop a plan that's tailored to meet your personal needs, including hypnosis, homework, self-hypnosis and EFT tapping. Unlike the "stage" hypnosis you may have seen on television or in the movies, you will remain in complete control during hypnosis, remembering everything we've said and done, and emerging feeling refreshed, relaxed and alert. Although I will teach you a number of time-tested techniques to minimize or alleviate the symptoms of Performance Anxiety in the short-term, it’s always my goal to work with you to find the underlying cause of your anxiety in order to help you perform at your best in the future.
